After serving 23 years as an Operator in our nation’s most elite Special Operations Forces Units, Lane Kjellsen retired from the military with the desire to continue to serve his country in a new way. During his tenure in the military Mr. Kjellsen researched, developed, tested, and evaluated advanced technologies aimed to better protect warfighters and defeat enemies. He experienced what technologies worked, what didn’t work, and what needed improvement, acting as liaison between military and engineers to develop new products and improvements. With an intimate understanding of the needs of Special Operations Warfighters, Mr. Kjellsen sought to use his expertise and provide the best solutions to protect America and the men and women who serve it. Dedicated to this goal on September 15, 2003, in a room above their garage in Southern Pines, North Carolina, Lane and his wife, Sue Kjellsen, founded K2 Solutions, Inc.
Not long after K2’s inception we were awarded our first contract by the U.S. Army Armament, Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) and since then, K2, and now more than 270 employees, have supported over 125 contracts, subcontracts, and task orders for the military, public safety, other government agencies, and commercial enterprises. Over the years, K2 has adapted and expanded its services to meet the changing needs of Government organizations and service men and women. This has included our long-standing commitment and support to organizations like the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO), the Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) and the Joint Expeditionary Team (JET). In 2007, K2 was awarded a Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) contract to provide logistics and training support for the first iterations of training required by the newly formed Marine Special Operations Command.
Also in 2007, recognizing the growing market for Military Working Dogs (MWDs) we were awarded our first canine contract to provide training and support to the Naval Special Warfare Command (NAVSPECWARCOM), which became the foundation for five Marine Corps Improvised Explosive Device Detector Dog (IDD) contracts. The addition of logistical and canine support services, in tandem with our expansion of special operations services, increased K2’s capabilities significantly. In 2009, we formed our Canine Business Unit, laying the groundwork for the K2 Canine Training Center, a 125 acre comprehensive kennel and training facility in Richmond County, North Carolina. Experiencing our largest growth spurt to date, K2 grew from 100 employees in 2010 to 300 employees in 2011, many of them veterans. K2 was recognized as the 2010 North Carolina American Legion Veteran’s Employer of the Year and the 2011 North Carolina Disabled American Veterans Employer of the Year. In 2012, we formally expanded our logistics capabilities with our Logistics Business Unit which handles explosive sales, GSA contract opportunities, supply and support, and product development efforts.
Today, K2 continues to focus on three service areas, Canines, Special Operations, and Logistics, each delivering specific, tailored, and innovative solutions to clients. We now boast the largest civilian Canine Training facility in the US. K2 continues to build upon the expertise of men and women who have served our country with personnel located worldwide and multiple offices. Beginning with the goal to better the technology used by our warfighters, K2 remains dedicated to providing solutions to protect America and Americans in all the services we provide.
