K2 Achieves First DHS SAFETY Act Designation for Person-Borne Explosive Detection

Leading the Industry—K2 Solutions Achieves First DHS SAFETY Act Designation for its Person-Borne Explosive Detection Canine Handler Teams!

On May 3, 2024, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) awarded K2 a full SAFETY Act Designation for its Person-Borne Explosive Detection Canine (PB-EDC) Handler Teams, continuing K2’s long history of setting the standard within the canine industry.

K2’s PB-EDC Handler Teams are a DHS “Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology.” For this Technology, K2 was originally awarded a SAFETY Act Developmental, Testing & Evaluation (DT&E) Designation on April 27, 2016, with renewal on March 4, 2020. Since that time, K2 has been the only Explosive Detection Canine provider to earn a SAFETY Act DT&E Designation for Person-Borne Explosive Detection. Due to K2’s proven efficacy, external validation, and comprehensive Quality Assurance / Quality Control reporting, the DHS made the decision to move the PB-EDC Technology to a full SAFETY Act Designation.

Today, K2 is the only provider in the canine industry to deliver comprehensive Person-Borne and traditional Explosive Detection Canine Handler screening that is SAFETY Act Designated.

“May 03, 2024: K2 Solutions, Inc., provides Person-Borne Explosive Detection Canine Teams. The Technology is the use of proprietary explosive detection canine teams to detect explosives carried by individuals, e.g., in backpacks, vests, and/or on clothing, by tracking the odor from explosive material to a moving source. The Technology is also used to locate explosives on stationary objects. The Technology includes hiring and vetting of personnel, and policies and procedures used for its deployment. This Designation will expire on April 30, 2029.” SafetyAct.gov

K2 maintains three separate and distinct SAFETY Act Designations—one for its Single-Purpose, traditional Explosive Detection Canine Handler Teams, one for its Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Certified Cargo Screening Facility Canine (CCSF-K9), and one for its Person-Borne Explosive Detection Canine Handler Teams.
